Gym & Sport in La Paz

Running this week in La Paz continues to be a forbidden pleasure. If Cusco and Ollantaytambo were not suitable, well, La Paz is even worse. Its streets are narrow and busy with an infinite number of cars, minibus and vans. The smog causes you troubles breathing even while walking, and in the few desolated areas stray dogs appear at every corner. Not to mention there is not a single meter of flat land in this unique city.

I discovered too late (when I saw the runners passing in front of our apartment) that last Sunday, 29th October, there was one of the rare popular runs organized in this city at 3600mt. What a bummer! I would have loved to partecipate!

Anyway, since we arrived here, I have been attending a fantastic gym, so I decided to write a short and nice review for it. As well as sharing my training program for these 11 days spent in La Paz.

We are staying in the Sopocachi district so I looked for gyms around here and beside few old-style gyms my options narrowed down to 2 clubs: Spazio Wellness Lounge and the Premier Fitness Club. I went to visit both and they both look good, displayed new machines and high quality of hygiene. I opted for Spazio Wellness Lounge with a 2 weeks package for 250 bolivianos (30€) and I would recommend it to everyone!

Spazio Wellness Lounge

This new club has 4 different gyms in Bolivia, 3 of them in La Paz (Sopocachi, Calacoto, El Alto) and the other one in Cochabamba. Membership packages vary from 2 weeks to a nicely discounted yearly subscription, and a single entry costs 60 bolivianos (7.5€). They also run special promotions and offers (they now have a special “get ready for summer” discount).

The premises are very modern and very clean. In fact there is always one cleaner making sure everything is left tidy and polish. All the machines and equipment are brand new, although the space is not very big so they only one version of each. They however have a wide set of free weights and at least one modern machine for each muscle type.

Upstairs you can find a bunch of treadmills, elliptic machines and bicycles, all with a lovely view over Placa Abaroa. In the upper level there is also a small space for free exercises and a quite large spinning room. They offer spinning and top-ride classes everyday in the mornings and the evenings.

Talking about group classes, in Bolivia they do not seem to be very popular. You get a sense of it when you see the schedule of the gyms, but you get very surprised when you show up for a class and you are the only one attending it! It happened to me once and 3 times to Julie already! Nevertheless, instructors at Spazio Wellness Lounge are very professional and welcoming.

The club features also two sauna and the changing rooms are, once again, very clean and well taken care of. All the personnel have been very friendly, but not intrusive, and always ready to help with a smile, including the DJ. Yes the DJ. Because here you will find also a live DJ playing music on a high stage, with disco lights propagating in the room!

Training Program

So what have I been up to at Spazio Wellness Lounge? As I like better group classes I try to attend as many as possible, plus running a bit as much as I can for as little as I like to do it on a treadmill. Result: running (and generally aerobic activities) at 3600mt really is tougher than at sea level!  I didn’t find weight lifting much harder, but you do run out of breath faster.

Palestra e Sport a La Paz
